16 UAA Review

We’re Back………………….

After a disappointing one point loss to the Houston Defenders at the semifinals of UAA Memorial Day Classic, Team Curry look to leave no doubt that they may be the best 16’s program on the Under Armour circuit. Team Curry was on a mission and went 7 – 0 at Session 1 of the UAA event. Led the balance play in the back court of Silas DeMary (11.6 ppg), Bryce Cash (8.6 ppg) and Riley Allenspach (5.4 Rebs) and Callum Richard (8.6 ppg 4.2 Rebs) in the front court. DeMary and Cash took turns scoring off the bounce, and hitting shots from the wings. Allenspach should the ability to step out on the mid-range, but did a ton of the dirty work on rebounds and putbacks. Richard scored on post ups, with a couple of really nasty rim rattling dunks several plays.

We Only Got One ………………

Texas Impact 4:13 and Team Thrill both went 6-1 and this weekend, Thrill’s only lost this weekend was a 66-63 to B.Maze Elite with Blue Cain who went for 28 points, while the Impact 4:13 only suffered a lost to the Jersey based Team Rio 64-58. Texas Impact was led by the shooting of Garrett Nuckolls (15 ppg), Bralyn Smith (13.8), and the inside play of Bishop Jones (12.6 ppg and 8.0 Rebs). Team Thrill’s Michael Williams showed the ability to score the ball from the wing with some nice looking jumpers or drives. 6’8 Derik Queen is a problem, the big man can handle the ball and score it anyway he wants to in 4 games he averaged 20.5 ppg and 6 Rebs, he also showed the ability to protect the rim and change plays on the defensive end. Arizona Select, West Coast Elite, Houston Defenders, and Canada Elite with the play of Anthony Wrzeszcz all went 5 – 2.

Home Cooking……………

While the Lakepoint Sports Complex, played host to the 1st stop on the UAA Association, their was one team who was familiar with arena baskets and goals. The Atlanta Xpress shook off the first day jitter after going 0 – 2, and finished the weekend 5 – 0. Guard play is the way for the Xpress led by Top 100 guards Stephon Castle, and Jakai Newton. Add Marquavious Brown and absolute bucket getter Marcus (MJ) Whitlock. Castle 6’6 point guard knows how to dissect a defense using his size, and loves to score on the mid range jumper or the long ball, Castle showed he plays both ends of the floor beating guys to the basket for blocks. Jakai Newton recently received a offer from Georgia Tech, showed his ability to score on the bounce and has a nice in between game, finished the weekend with 37 points vs KC Run GMC. Marquavious Brown the 6’4 athletic wing showed he can score on jumpers or drives, and should he can lock in defensively. The lefty received a offer from South Carolina this weekend. Since we got a Georgia theme going MJ Whitlock reminds me of current Hawks star Lou Williams, he just finds ways to put the ball in the basket. He can step out and shoot the 3 ball, he has a nice floater game and sneaky athleticism. Add emerging big man Zion Gardner, Tycen McDaniels, Tyson Jones and high energy wing Kristian Hodges the Xpress are ready for Texas next week.
