Longtime NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski announced on X this morning that he is retiring from ESPN. It surprised the entire sports world, including other sports legends like Stephen A. Smith. Wojnarowski joined the network in 2017, and became notorious for his “Woj Bombs”. He was the most trusted source for breaking news, and now the basketball world will have to move on without his services.
His impact will be missed, but this beckons the question of who will replace the legendary broadcaster. NBA Insider, Shams Charania, is likely the top candidate to replace Wojnarowski at ESPN. Charania rose to fame during the last few NBA seasons due to his inside connections and analytical mind.
His great interview skills have made him a trusted sit-down with some of the biggest names in basketball. He currently works for The Athletic, which is considered the biggest publication in all of sports writing, but ESPN will undoubtedly have their sights set on him.
He has the capability to fulfill Wojnarowski’s role and perform the same level of quality news coverage. His immense popularity will also entice ESPN to hire him. Charania recently signed a deal with FanDuel because his reporting influences the betting lines of daily matchups and fans have won money because of it.
Another possible candidate could be NBA insider Chris Haynes, who recently left TNT Sports after his contract ended last season, and he did not renew after five years with Turner. Media Pundits believe the new TV deal with NBC was the cause of this. He performed stellar coverage during the regular season and playoffs, and he is a highly reliable source with all of his deep connections.
It will be interesting to see what route ESPN decides to go as Wojnarowski leaves a massive hole in their basketball coverage. ESPN chairman James Pitaro and Disney CEO Bob Iger will have to make an urgent decision as the NBA season is approaching next month. The Athletic reported Wojnarowski turned down $20 million to return for the 2024-25 Season. Some fans are not fond of certain reporters on the network, but Wojnarowski was universally loved by all the viewers.
He has accepted a role with his alma mater, Saint Bonaventure University, as a General Manager for their basketball program. The Bonnies finished 20-13 during the 2023-24 season, and Wojnarowski's basketball mind will be a major help to the program. He will serve directly under head coach Mark Schmidt to help the team recruit new talent and He will oversee their Name, Image, and Likeness allocation.
The entire basketball world will miss his Woj bombs, but we wish him the absolute best as he enters the next chapter of his life.
